Blood Donation 101: Who Can Donate, and Why It Matters in India

India needs roughly 15 million units of blood every year, and shortfalls are common — especially outside metro cities, and especially during festival seasons when travel and donation both dip at once. Most of that need doesn't come from accidents; it comes from planned surgeries, cancer treatment, childbirth complications, and conditions like thalassemia that require regular transfusions for life.

In general, if you're between 18-65, weigh over 50kg, and are in reasonably good health, you can donate. A full meal and enough sleep the night before matters more than most people realize. You can donate roughly once every three months.

A few myths worth retiring: donating blood does not make you weak long-term (your body replaces the volume within 24-48 hours), a tattoo or piercing from a licensed studio doesn't permanently disqualify you (there's typically just a waiting period), and being vegetarian has no bearing on eligibility.

We built the blood donation directory on this platform because the gap between 'someone needs blood right now' and 'someone nearby is willing to give it' is often just a matter of not knowing who to ask. If you're eligible, registering takes two minutes and doesn't require an account.
