We're a Backbone, Not a Crutch: Why We Measure Success by Who Stops Needing Us

A backbone doesn't carry you. It's the thing that lets you stand up and carry yourself. That distinction matters more to us than it probably should to a crowdfunding platform, so it's worth explaining.

It would be easy to build this around dependency: repeat campaigns, recurring donors, a family that comes back every few months because that's how the model stays warm. We've deliberately built against that. A verified campaign exists to solve one problem: this treatment, this bill, this emergency. When it's funded, our job is done. We don't want to be a subscription. We want to be the thing that gets a family back to a place where they don't need us again.

That's also why 'support' was never going to be the whole plan. Emergency funding gets someone through a crisis; it doesn't by itself get them to self-reliance. So the parts of this platform that look unrelated to medical crowdfunding (the volunteer program, the resource directory pointing to organizations doing legal aid and skills training and government scheme access) exist because standing on your own two feet after a crisis usually needs more than one rupee amount solved once.

We inherited this instinct from the same place the 0% fee did: watching what actually helped during two COVID waves. Money mattered. But so did the neighbor who kept checking in after the emergency was over, the volunteer who helped someone navigate a government scheme they didn't know existed, the blood donor who became a friend instead of a one-time transaction. A backbone shows up once, hard, and then gets out of the way.

If you ever use this platform and never need to come back, that's not us losing a user. That's the entire point working.
