Why We Serve: A Letter to Every Indian Who Still Believes in India

Every August and January, timelines fill with flags and film songs, and then, mostly, that's it for another year. I don't think that's hypocrisy — I think most people genuinely don't know what to do with the feeling on the other 363 days. Love of country needs a verb attached to it, or it just sits there.

We found ours by accident. In 2020, a handful of us started moving food and medicine to families who'd lost everything to the first COVID wave. We weren't trying to be patriotic. We were trying to be useful to the people fifteen minutes away from us. It turned out those are the same thing.

Here's the pattern we keep seeing: the India that shows up during a crisis — the strangers sailing boats toward flood water in Kerala, the Gurdwaras that never stop cooking, the neighbor who drives someone else's father to the hospital at 3am — is not a different India from the one that argues about cricket and complains about traffic. It's the same country, just with the volume turned up. Service doesn't require becoming a different, more virtuous person. It requires noticing that the instinct is already there and giving it somewhere to go.

That's the actual pitch behind everything we've built here — not 'donate because you love India,' but 'here is somewhere to put the thing you already feel.' A verified medical campaign. A blood donor directory. A volunteer form that takes four minutes. None of it is glamorous. Most of national service isn't. It's mostly document-checking, phone calls, and showing up on a Tuesday when nobody's watching.

If you're waiting for a bigger moment to matter — a war, a disaster, a headline — I'd gently push back. Ramesh needing dialysis this week is somebody's whole world. Building a country, one rupee and one verified campaign at a time, is not a smaller thing than the version of patriotism that only fits on a flag. It might be the only version that actually adds up to something.
